Obituary
Otis D. Williams was born on October 6, 1950 to the union of George Lincoln and Emma Kelly Williams in New Orleans, LA. He was the second of six children. He was baptized at an early age by and began his Christian journey at Mount Zion Baptist Church. A graduate of Glen Oaks High School, he went on to attend Southern University completing his Bachelors of Science degree in Education. Otis served as an educator at Crestworth Middle School in the East Baton Rouge Parish School system until retirement, inspiring the minds of young people. He was united in holy matrimony to Brenda Smith in 1970 and to this union one child was born, LaMoyne D. Williams. An avid supporter of Southern University Football, he and LaMoyne attended many football games, both in Baton Rouge and on the road.
Otis always had a love for gospel music. In his late teens, he studied organ under the late Sis. Joyce Howard. Once he was able to put chords together he began his church musical career as the organist for the Youth Choir at Shady Grove Baptist Church. For more than 50 years Otis has ministered tirelessly and selfishly to God’s people through song. In addition to Shady Grove he served the followings churches - some of which spanned for more than 25 years: Freeman Baptist Church, First Emanuel Baptist Church, Greater Little Zion Baptist Church, St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Richardson Chapel Church of God in Christ, Mt. Zion Baptist Church and Peter Rock Baptist Church. Before his transition to glory on Monday morning, he sat at the organ at St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church praising God through song Sunday evening. Otis kept his promise and served until he died on the battlefield for his Lord.
His musical contributions to greater Baton Rouge community where numerous; he founded the Williams Ensemble and served as musician for Voices of Zion. One of his greatest joys was working with the Freeman Baptist Church Male Chorus. He also shared his talent by mentoring other young church musicians. A person never to meet a stranger, Otis greeted everyone he met with a smile and was known for never saying “no.”
On October 20th, 2014, Otis rejoiced with the angles leaving behind his earthly tabernacle. Cherishing his memory is his Mother and best friend, Emma K Williams; a devoted son, LaMoyne D. Williams; one sister Mona (Bernard) Haynes; four brothers George (Maureen), Gerald, Gregory and Crayton Williams; a loving god-daughter Sheaveatria Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his Grandmothers Effie Freeman and Caroline Williams and Father George L Williams.
